To verify a Google Business Profile, open the profile, select Get verified, and complete whichever method Google offers you: phone or text, email, live video call, postcard, video recording, or (for some businesses) instant verification. Google decides which of those you see, based on your business type, public information, region and business hours, and you cannot swap the method for another one. Our take: verification is a gate, not a ranking lever, so the winning move is to make the first attempt the only attempt. Settle your business name, address and category before you start, answer the method Google gives you exactly as written, and do not touch those fields while a code is in the mail. Google’s own help names exactly those two mistakes, editing the profile and requesting a second code mid-flow, as what delays or cancels a postcard code.
This guide goes through every method Google’s help lists, who gets which, how long each takes where Google says so, and what to do when verification fails or a code never arrives. Everything below about Google’s process comes from Google’s verification help page and the pages it links to. Where Google’s page is silent, we say so rather than guess.

Why verification matters
Google’s help for finding your profile states that only verified businesses can show their business info on Maps and Search (Find your business on Google). Google’s help for managing a profile says that once you verify, you can make changes on Maps and Search, and Google’s local ranking tips list verifying your business as a tip, because it tells Google you are authorized to represent the business, so it is more likely to show up in search results. The same tips page says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence, and that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. In other words, verifying is the entry ticket, not a ranking lever.
If you have not created the profile yet, start with how to create a Google Business Profile and check eligibility first, because an ineligible business cannot be verified however many times it tries.
Who gets which verification method
Google’s page is direct about this: verification options are chosen automatically from your business type, public information about the business, your region and your business hours. You cannot change the method. Some businesses need to complete more than one.
Google does not publish a rule that says “restaurants get a postcard, plumbers get video.” Several third-party guides do claim to know the logic, and our no-video guide covers the practical signals that tend to change what is offered, clearly labelled as our reading rather than Google’s statement. What Google itself confirms is narrower: some methods are “not available for all businesses,” and the live video call is only offered during your location’s business hours.
Every method, side by side
| Method | What you do | Timing per Google | Notes from Google’s help |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone or text | Choose Phone or SMS under Get verified, enter the code on your profile | No timeframe given | You must be able to answer the business phone line or receive texts. Automated phone systems cannot receive the code |
| Choose Email under Get verified and follow the message | No timeframe given | You must be able to access the address shown on the verification screen | |
| Live video call | Choose Live video call, then Next, pick a language, select Start call | No timeframe given | Only during your location’s business hours, not offered for every business, you must be at the business |
| Postcard | Confirm your mailing address and request a code, then enter the 5-digit code | Most codes arrive within 14 days; the code expires after 30 days | Do not edit name, address or category, or request a second code, while waiting |
| Video recording | Record and upload a video from your Business Profile | Review can take up to 5 business days | Separate help page with the requirements. Our video guide covers it |
| Instant | Verify your website in Search Console, or be verified in bulk | Instant | Available only if Google offers it for your profile |
Phone or text
Select Phone or SMS under Get verified and Google sends a code to the business phone number, which you enter on your profile. Google’s warning is specific: you must be able to answer the business phone line or receive text messages, and an automated phone system (an IVR menu, for example) cannot receive the code. If your main number rings into a menu tree or a call-center queue, this method will fail even though the number is correct. Plan to have a person with access to the line at the moment you request the code.
Select Email under Get verified and follow the steps in the message Google sends. Google’s condition is that you must be able to access the address shown on the verification screen. If that is a shared inbox nobody monitors, or an old address from a previous owner of the domain, you will not see the message. Check the address Google displays before you press the button, not after.
Live video call
The live video call is a conversation with a Google representative while you stand at your business. Google says it is available only during your location’s business hours and is not offered for every business. You need a device that supports live video, and Google asks you to show your location (outside signs, nearby businesses or a street sign), your business or equipment (merchandise, branded gear, promotional materials or the tools you use with customers), and proof that you manage the business (employee-only areas, a cash register, a kitchen, a storage room, non-sensitive business documents, or your keys opening the facility). The steps Google lists are Get verified, Live video call, Next, choose a language, then Start call, which starts a text chat with a support representative who then helps you join the video call.
Postcard by mail
The postcard method is the one people search about most (google my business postcard, google business verification postcard), so the details matter. Per Google’s postcard verification page:
- You confirm your mailing address, then request a code. Most codes arrive within 14 days.
- The code is 5 digits and you enter it in the Code field, then select Submit.
- Verification codes expire after 30 days.
- Do not request a new code, and do not edit your business name, address or category, while you wait. Google says doing so cancels the code already in the mail and sends a new postcard, which lengthens the process.
- If your address changes before you are verified, only the code for your current address works, so you need to request a new one.
- You cannot change your Business Profile name until verification is complete.
- Google never asks you for your code and will not call to ask for it. Do not share it with anyone, including people who manage your profile or marketing firms.
That last point has a practical cousin in our guide to Google business listing scams: a caller or email asking you to read out a verification code is not Google.
Video recording
Google lists this as a separate method and recommends it where your business is eligible. The review after you upload can take up to 5 business days, and if the video is not accepted, you open your profile on your phone, tap Review issues to see what is missing, and record a new video that includes everything from the first plus the missing items. The video must be filmed live, unedited and at least 30 seconds, and online-only businesses with no in-person services are not eligible. We keep the full requirements on one page so they stay accurate: see how to verify a Google Business Profile without a video for what the recording has to show and what to do when it is the only option you see. Google’s own page is Verify your business with a video recording.
Instant verification
Google says it can verify you immediately if you verify your website through Search Console, or if you are verified in bulk. It is not something you can request for any profile, so treat it as a bonus when it appears. If you already own the website’s Search Console property, it is worth checking whether Google offers this before you start a slower method.
How long verification takes
Here is what Google actually commits to on its verification page, and nothing more:
- Review: up to 5 business days after you finish the steps, and “on rare occasions” longer.
- Search Console and bulk verification: instant.
- Postcard: most codes arrive within 14 days, then the code expires after 30 days.
- Phone, email and live video call: the page gives no timeframe.
When a guide promises “verified in minutes” or “verified in 48 hours” for a method Google gives no timeframe for, it is stating its own experience, not Google’s rule. Build your plan around the 5-business-day review and the 14-day postcard window.
Verification code not received
Search interest for “google business profile verification code not received” is small but intent-heavy, and Google’s own help does not have a dedicated page for it. What the help pages do establish:
- Phone or text: confirm someone can answer the business line or read texts at the number on file, and that the number does not route to an automated system.
- Email: confirm you can open the address shown on the verification screen.
- Postcard: wait for the 14-day window. During it, do not edit name, address or category and do not request a new code.
- Any method: if the Get verified button comes back, Google says it could not fully verify the business, so try again or use another offered method.
- Still nothing: Google’s postcard page points to its support team. Use Google’s support contact page rather than a third party who promises to “fix” verification.
A tip from our side, not Google’s: write down the date you requested a postcard, the address you confirmed, and the exact business name on the profile. If you contact support, those three facts answer the first questions.
Google Business Profile not verifying
When verification fails, Google’s help describes three outcomes:
| What you see | What Google says it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The Get verified button reappears | Google could not completely verify your business | Try again or use another method you are offered |
| A Review issues notification (video) | The video was rejected | Select Review issues and follow the on-screen instructions |
| A request for more information | Your business information was recently changed | Select Get verified and re-verify |
The harder failure is the postcard lockout. Google’s page says verification fails after more than 5 incorrect code entries, and that you must then remove the profile and create a new one. Google’s postcard page also says businesses get a limited number of verification attempts over a period of time, without stating the number. The cheap prevention is to enter the code once, carefully, from the newest postcard only, since an older code from an earlier request does not work.
Two other situations look like “not verifying” but are not:
- Someone else already verified the business. Then the path is requesting ownership or access, not verifying again. Our ownership transfer guide walks through requesting access and the three-day window Google gives the current owner to respond.
- The profile is suspended or disabled. Google says the public cannot reach a suspended profile and the owner and managers cannot act on it; the fix is an appeal, not another verification. See Google Business Profile suspended.
A checklist before you press Get verified
- Business name, address, category and phone number are final. Changing name, address or category after requesting a postcard code breaks it.
- The phone number rings to a person, not an automated menu.
- You can open the email address Google will show.
- The mailing address is one where mail reaches you, with suite or unit number correct.
- You are at the business, during business hours, if a live video call is likely.
- You know where your Search Console property is, in case instant verification is offered.
- You are not sharing the code with anyone who asks for it.
After you are verified
Google’s help says you are notified when a business is verified. From there, the profile is the anchor that every other listing should agree with. A local citation on any directory repeats the same name, address and phone number, so a directory that disagrees with the verified profile puts a conflicting record about your business on the web. Run the free NAP checker against your live details, and keep the results in line with the guidance in NAP consistency. If your profile does not show on the map after verification, see our guide on a business not showing on Google Maps.

We read the following Google pages for this guide: Verify your business on Google, Help with postcard verification, Verify your business with a video recording, Find your business on Google and Tips to improve your local ranking on Google. We could not find an official Google page that addresses “verification code not received” as a standalone topic, so that section is assembled from the method pages above plus our own suggestions, which are marked as such. Google changes menu labels and eligibility over time, so confirm the live screen before you act.
Frequently asked questions
How do I verify my Google Business Profile?
Open your profile and select Get verified, then pick one of the methods Google shows you: phone or text, email, live video call, postcard, or video recording. Google decides which of those appear for your business, so you cannot choose one that is not on the screen. Finish the steps and Google reviews the result; you are notified when the profile is verified.
Can I choose how I verify my Google Business Profile?
No. Google's help page says it chooses the verification options automatically from your business type, public information about the business, your region and your business hours, and that you cannot change the method. Some businesses are asked to complete more than one.
How long does each Google Business Profile verification method take?
It depends on the method. Google says reviews take up to 5 business days after you finish the steps, and on rare occasions longer. Verification through Search Console or bulk verification is instant, and a postcard code usually arrives within 14 days. Google gives no timeframe on its help page for phone, email or live video call.
My Google Business Profile postcard has not arrived. What should I do?
Wait out the 14 days Google quotes for most codes, and do not edit your business name, address or category, or request another code, while you wait. If nothing arrives after that, Google's help points you to its support team. Codes expire 30 days after they are issued, and only the most recent code works.
Why is my Google Business Profile verification code not arriving?
For a phone or text code, Google says you must be able to answer the business phone line or receive texts, and that automated phone systems cannot receive the code. For email, you must be able to open the address shown on the verification screen. If the code still does not come, go back to Get verified and try another method if one is offered, or contact Google support.
What does it mean when the Get verified button comes back?
Google says the button reappearing means it could not fully verify your business. Try again or use another method you are offered. If Google asks for more information, it says some business details were recently changed, and you re-verify from Get verified.
