A move, a rebrand or a category clean-up is the moment a Google Business Profile is most likely to be suspended, and it catches owners out because the change was legitimate. Google is not punishing the move. It is asking you to prove, again, that the profile still represents a real business at a real place, and the edits you made are what triggered the question. This guide covers why address and name changes trigger suspensions, how to appeal once and properly, and how to make the change so it does not happen.

Why a legitimate change triggers a suspension

Google verified your profile against a specific business at a specific address. Editing the fields that identity rests on (address, name, primary category, phone) tells Google’s systems the profile may now describe something else. Some patterns raise the odds sharply:

  • Several fields changed at once. A new address, a new name and a new category in one sitting look like a profile being repurposed rather than a business moving.
  • The new address looks non-commercial. A residence, a PO box, a co-working desk or a virtual office. Google’s rules require a location customers can visit during stated hours, or a hidden address with declared service areas for a service area business.
  • A service area business now shows its address. Showing a home or a yard as a storefront is the classic trades suspension.
  • A duplicate already exists at the new address. Another profile (an old one, a previous tenant’s, one a staff member made) at the same location and category reads as a duplicate.
  • The edit was made before the move. A profile pointing at premises you do not yet occupy fails a spot check.
  • The name gained keywords. “Brand” becoming “Brand Emergency Plumber Riverside” is a name violation regardless of the move.

The address rules and their inconsistency traps are covered in service area business citations; the name rules in business name change: update every listing.

Soft versus hard suspension

A soft suspension leaves the profile visible in Search and Maps but flags it as unverified; you lose management access until re-verification. A hard suspension removes the profile from Search and Maps. Both are appealed the same way. The difference is urgency: a hard suspension costs you the map pack every day, which tempts owners into two mistakes, appealing before they have fixed the cause, and creating a new profile in the meantime. Both make it worse.

Before you appeal: fix the cause

Google’s process asks you to review the guidelines and correct violations before appealing, and appeals submitted without a fix are the ones that fail. Work through:

  1. Address. Is it a real location customers can visit, or correctly hidden with service areas set if they cannot? Is it exactly the address on your lease or licence?
  2. Name. The real-world name only, as on your signage and documents. Remove anything appended.
  3. Category. The single most accurate primary category, secondary categories only where genuinely applicable.
  4. Duplicates. Search Maps for your name, your old address, your new address and your phone number. If a second profile exists, it needs to be marked as a duplicate or closed, not left to compete. Finding and fixing duplicate listings.
  5. Consistency elsewhere. Google cross-checks the profile against the web. If your website footer, Apple listing, Bing listing and the major directories still show the old address, the profile is the odd one out. Bring them into line now, using the order in how to change your business address everywhere; it strengthens the appeal and is work you have to do anyway.

Appeal once, with evidence

Submit one appeal through Google’s reinstatement process and attach evidence that the business operates at the address as described: a business licence or registration, a utility bill or lease in the business name at the new address, photos of the exterior with signage and the interior, and, for a service area business, evidence of the trade (licences, insurance, vehicle signage). Google’s process gives you a limited window to attach evidence once you open the form, so gather everything first. Then wait. Re-submitting while an appeal is open does not accelerate it, and creating a new profile during an appeal is treated as a further violation and can get both profiles removed.

Timelines vary: straightforward cases resolve in days to a couple of weeks, manual reviews can take several weeks. Use the wait productively: the rest of your listings should agree with the corrected profile by the time it comes back.

How to make the change without a suspension

  • Change on moving day, not before. Edit the address on the day you operate from it.
  • Change only what changed. Address today; category or name another week, if they genuinely need changing at all.
  • Keep the phone number where you can. It is the matching key that lets Google and every directory reconcile the old record with the new one.
  • Hide the address if customers do not visit. Set service areas instead.
  • Check for a profile at the new address first. Claim or close it before you move yours in.
  • Expect re-verification and complete it fast. A video or phone verification request after an address edit is normal, not a suspension.
  • Update the web around the profile within days. Apple, Bing, Foursquare, your site, then the directories. A profile that agrees with the rest of the web is one Google has less reason to question. The Google Business Profile checklist covers what to re-check after any edit.

Franchises and multi-location brands

Rolling a name or category change across dozens of profiles in one afternoon is how brands suspend a whole region at once. Change a few profiles at a time, keep the naming convention identical, and make sure each unit’s location page and citations already carry the new value. The per-location discipline is in franchise SEO.

Where citations fit

A suspension after an address change is, underneath, a consistency problem: the profile changed and the web did not. The durable fix is to know every listing you hold so a change is a list of known URLs rather than a search. Citation Builder records every listing it builds with its live URL and a screenshot, re-verifies live listings on a schedule, and matches on phone number in its pre-build audit so a record still carrying the old address is corrected rather than duplicated. Google Business Profile itself stays yours to manage directly; it is surfaced as a recommended citation, never posted to. The listings it builds are permanent and owned by you.

Frequently asked questions

Why was my Google Business Profile suspended after I changed the address?

An address change is one of the edits Google treats as a signal that the profile may no longer represent the business it verified. The risk is higher when several fields change at once, when the new address looks like a residence or a virtual office, when a service area business shows an address customers cannot visit, or when another profile already exists at the new location. The suspension is a re-verification demand, not a penalty for moving.

How do I fix a suspended Google Business Profile?

First find and correct the violation: the address, the name, the category, a duplicate. Then submit one appeal through Google's process with evidence that the business operates at the address as described, such as a business licence, a utility bill, signage photos and the storefront. Do not create a new profile while the appeal is open; Google treats that as a further violation.

What is the difference between a soft and a hard suspension?

A soft suspension leaves the profile visible but marks it unverified, so you lose the ability to manage it until it is re-verified. A hard suspension removes the profile from Google Search and Maps entirely. Both are appealed the same way, but a hard suspension costs visibility every day it stays open, so gather evidence before you appeal rather than appealing twice.

How long does a Google Business Profile appeal take?

Simple cases are often resolved in days to a couple of weeks; cases that need a manual review can take several weeks. Appealing again while the first appeal is open does not speed it up. Use the wait to bring every other listing into line with the corrected address, so the reinstated profile agrees with the rest of the web.

Can I change my business address on Google without a suspension?

Usually, if you make the change on the day you operate at the new address, change only the fields that actually changed, keep the phone number, hide the address if customers do not visit it, and make sure no second profile exists at the new location. Update the rest of your listings promptly afterwards, because a profile that disagrees with every directory is more likely to be questioned.
