Thumbtack for business means a pro profile on Thumbtack’s home-services marketplace, where customers describe a job and Thumbtack shows them pros who fit, and where the thing you pay for is the lead, not the profile itself. Our take: set up the Thumbtack profile because it is a real public page for your business, but do not treat it as a free directory listing. The profile costs nothing to create, the product is the lead, and you are charged automatically once your job preferences are on, so choose your lead prices and weekly budget before you switch preferences on, not after the first charge. This guide covers what is free and what is paid, how to sign up and verify, how pricing and budgets work, refunds, how to edit, pause or close the account, and what a Thumbtack profile does for local SEO.

A note on sources. Every claim about Thumbtack below comes from Thumbtack’s own help center, read in November 2026. Thumbtack’s pro landing page (thumbtack.com/pro) returned an access-restricted notice to the tools we used, so we could not read it and we rely on the help center instead. Thumbtack publishes no fixed dollar price for a lead on any page we read, so this guide gives none.

Thumbtack for Business: Pro Profile, Leads and Costs, illustrated cover

Thumbtack for business: what is free and what is paid

The confusion about Thumbtack comes from two true statements that sound like opposites. Thumbtack’s How Thumbtack works article opens with “We show customers your business, for free.” And its pricing article says that on Thumbtack you pay for leads, meaning new customers who reach out to you directly. Both are accurate: showing up costs nothing, being contacted does.

FreePaid
Pro profileCreating it and describing your services, photos and reviewsNo profile fee on the pages we read
Leads (customer finds you and reaches out)The match itselfAn automatic charge at the lead price you set, when the job fits your job preferences
Opportunities (open requests you choose to answer)Browsing themThe price shown up front, charged only if the customer replies
Preset jobs (date and time already booked)Claiming oneA percentage of the customer’s payment, taken by Thumbtack
Background checkFree, per ThumbtackNothing
Credit packagesOptionalPrepaid, sold as final

Our catalog labels Thumbtack free, and that label describes the listing: a profile can exist without a subscription. It does not mean customer contacts are free, and the rest of this guide is about that difference. Thumbtack is on 3 of our industry citation lists (cleaners, contractors and tradespersons), each time in position 5.

How to sign up for Thumbtack as a pro

Thumbtack’s help center describes the setup like this: before customers can see you in search results you need to finish your pro account, which includes finishing your profile, setting your job preferences and adding a payment method. Its terms add that you must have at least one valid payment method stored on the account to use Thumbtack. In practice:

  1. Start from the Sign up as a pro link on Thumbtack’s site and create the account. Use the same business name, phone number and website you use everywhere else.
  2. Build the profile. Thumbtack’s guide to your first two weeks says your profile is how you show customers you are the best pro for the job: describe the business, and add photos of the kinds of jobs you want, with captions.
  3. Set your job preferences. These tell Thumbtack which jobs you want, where you work and when you are available. Thumbtack states that your business does not appear in search results until the preferences are set.
  4. Set lead prices and a budget (see the pricing section below), then add the payment method.
  5. Take the background check and add credentials (next section) so the profile looks complete.
  6. Look yourself up the way a customer would. Thumbtack suggests searching for your own business to see how you compare with other pros in the results.

We did not create an account on Thumbtack for this guide, so the screens themselves may differ slightly from the steps above. If you hit an unexpected prompt, Thumbtack’s first-two-weeks guide is the most complete official walkthrough.

Verification: background check, license and insurance

Thumbtack’s background check article says every account owner must take and pass a criminal background check through a nationally accredited third-party provider when they create an account. The details it gives:

  • Where: in the Pro app, Profile, then the Credentials section, then Start next to Background Check.
  • Cost and ID: free, and an SSN is not required. A passport, driver’s license or a government-issued ID from another country can be used.
  • Name match: the account owner must submit it, and if the name on the check does not match the account name it is not processed.
  • Timing: results typically take 5 to 7 business days, and after you pass, the badge can take 1 to 3 more business days to show on the profile.
  • If it is not clear: Thumbtack says it looks at eligibility case by case.
  • Ongoing: Thumbtack says it also runs continuous checks on an annual basis.

The same help center says it verifies licenses for 25 or more professions within 1 to 2 business days and lets you upload business insurance to unlock exclusive jobs. Thumbtack also ties its Pro Rewards program to the background check and to quick responses.

What Thumbtack charges: leads, Opportunities, preset jobs and budgets

This is the part to read twice, because three different charging models run side by side.

ProductHow it worksWhen you pay
LeadsA customer sees your profile in search and contacts you, and the job matches your job preferences (Smart Match can also send leads outside your usual preferences when Thumbtack’s AI predicts a strong fit)Automatically, at the exact lead price you set
OpportunitiesOpen requests from customers still looking for quotes, found on the Jobs page; you reach out firstOnly if the customer responds, at the price shown up front
Preset jobsDate and time already scheduled by the customer; you claim itThumbtack takes a percentage of the customer’s payment, and you see your earnings before you claim

Lead prices. Thumbtack says it tries to match the cost to how valuable the job is, so prices vary with the type and size of the job, how many pros are available and your market. You set your own lead prices (App, Services, Manage lead prices, then the slider), and the price you set is the exact amount you pay per lead. Thumbtack shows an estimate of how many leads to expect as you adjust it and says higher prices make leads more likely.

Weekly budget. Thumbtack recommends a budget based on your lead prices, roughly your weekly spend across services. Its terms say a budget is not a subscription and is not charged up front: you are charged as fees are incurred. The last lead can push you over the budget, limited to the smaller of 40% of the budget or $40 plus 2% of the budget, and once you pass it you stop receiving new leads until it resets the following Monday. Opportunities do not count toward the budget.

Account balance. Preloading a balance is optional, and with auto-refill on it tops up when it runs out. Thumbtack’s terms say that if you lack enough purchasing history it may charge your payment method for each contact, and that once you have enough history it may charge periodically or when accrued fees reach a threshold.

Credit packages. Thumbtack says that when you first sign up you can buy a credit package and get extra credit free. Its terms add that prepaid packages do not expire but all sales are final and unused credit is not refundable.

Other fees. Thumbtack’s fee terms (last updated October 23, 2026) also mention penalty fees for fraud, misconduct, late payment or cancellation. For instant payout on preset-job earnings, its guide mentions a 1% fee; standard deposit takes 3 to 4 business days.

At the time of writing (November 2026), those rules are what Thumbtack’s fees and budget terms say. They are Thumbtack’s to change, so read the page before you set a budget.

Refunds on Thumbtack leads

Thumbtack’s refund policy for pros separates two kinds of refund:

  • Automatic: for example a lead flagged by its Trust and Safety team, or a Smart Match lead you decline and tell Thumbtack was not a fit.
  • Case by case: request within 45 days of the charge. Situations Thumbtack says will most likely qualify: the job changed significantly (such as moving outside your travel area), an Opportunity where the customer’s first reply is a clear no, a lead that violates its Terms of Use, a fixed-date job on a day you had blocked, an invalid phone number, and a duplicate lead for an identical job within 45 days.

All refunds are at Thumbtack’s sole discretion. By default a refund returns to your Thumbtack balance; you can ask for the original payment method within 10 business days of approval, but courtesy credits, prepaid packages and promotional balances cannot be refunded to a card. Thumbtack states plainly that it does not refund when a customer hires another pro, and that when you close your account, sales and fees are final.

How to edit your Thumbtack profile

Per Thumbtack’s editing guide: open the Pro app, tap Profile, use Preview profile to see what customers see, scroll to the section you want, and tap Edit. Do the same for photos, videos and services whenever your business changes. If your business name, phone number or website changes, update the Thumbtack profile on the same day as everything else, because a stale profile is a mismatch you created yourself. The free NAP checker shows where your details disagree across the web.

How to pause, hide or close your Thumbtack account

Thumbtack lists four options in How to stop receiving and paying for leads, in this order:

OptionWhat it does
Hide your businessHides you from search for up to 30 days, so you neither receive nor pay for new leads; you can still message current customers; Opportunities still arrive but are not charged and ignoring them does not hurt your account
Turn off job preferencesRemoves you from search for that service; Thumbtack remembers the settings so you can switch back on
Remove a serviceYou no longer appear for it and are not charged for it
Deactivate the accountPermanent: deletes account information including reviews, profile, projects and balance, and cannot be undone

To hide, go to Services in the Pro app, open the three-dot menu, choose Hide my business temporarily and pick an end date; the hide guide says the business reappears at 8am local time on the last day, or earlier if you tap Go live now. Before deactivating, spend any balance you want to use and download what you need, since the balance is deleted and Thumbtack says it will not refund fees on cancellation.

Reviews on a Thumbtack profile

Thumbtack’s first-two-weeks guide says a new pro can collect up to 10 reviews from past customers through a review link, that customers who hire you through Thumbtack can leave verified reviews with no limit, and that you can import up to 100 reviews from your Google Business Profile. Its refund article recommends a complete profile, a professional photo and at least five positive reviews. It also says response speed affects your rank in search results. For the wider picture on collecting reviews, see how to get more Google reviews and our roundup of review sites for business.

Does a Thumbtack pro profile help local SEO?

Be careful here. A Thumbtack profile is a public page on a major home-services marketplace, so it is one more place where your business name and services appear. But we found no independent source showing Thumbtack as a Google ranking factor, and the help pages we read describe customers contacting you through Thumbtack; they do not say the public profile publishes your own phone number or address. So we cannot call it a classic name, address and phone citation without you checking your live profile.

What is solid is the consistency point. If the profile shows your name, service area or website, they should match your Google Business Profile and every other listing; mismatches are what the local citation discipline exists to prevent. If you work from customers’ homes rather than a storefront, read our guide to service-area business citations. To see how Thumbtack ranks next to other sites for your trade, see the contractors citation list.

Common mistakes with Thumbtack

  • Turning on job preferences before setting lead prices and a budget. The first charge lands automatically.
  • Treating “free profile” as “free leads”. The profile is free to show; the contact is the product.
  • Forgetting about Opportunities. They do not count toward your weekly budget, so they can add spend on top of it.
  • Closing the account with a balance left. Deactivation deletes it, and fees are final.
  • Letting the profile drift. A new phone number or service area changed everywhere but Thumbtack is a mismatch you can avoid.
  • Skipping the background check. Thumbtack requires it, and a profile without credentials looks unfinished next to competitors.

Thumbtack alongside Angi, Houzz and your other listings

Most home-service pros run more than one lead marketplace. Our comparison of Angi, Houzz and Thumbtack profiles covers how they differ, and our Angi for business guide goes through the Angi side in the same way. For no-cost options that carry no per-contact fees, see our list of free business listing sites.

A Thumbtack profile is one you create and manage yourself, in your own account. For the directory side of the same trade, our citation building service for contractors covers the local directories a contractor usually needs next to the lead marketplaces.

Frequently asked questions

Is Thumbtack free for businesses?

Partly. Thumbtack's own help center says it shows customers your business for free, and the pro profile is where you describe your services and add photos. What you pay for is the lead: when a customer contacts you and the job matches your job preferences, you are charged automatically at the lead price you set. You also need a payment method on the account before you can use the platform, so 'free to list' and 'free to use' are not the same thing.

How much does Thumbtack cost for pros?

Thumbtack does not publish one price. At the time of writing (November 2026), its help center says lead prices vary with the type and size of the job, how many pros are available and your market, and that you choose your own lead prices, which is the exact amount you pay per lead. Opportunities are priced separately and shown up front, and you pay only if the customer replies. Preset jobs take a percentage of the customer's payment instead of an upfront lead fee.

How do I get on Thumbtack and list my business?

Use the Sign up as a pro link on Thumbtack's site, then finish setting up your pro account before customers can see you in search results. Thumbtack says that includes finishing your profile, setting your job preferences and adding a payment method, and that your business does not appear in search results until the job preferences are set. We could not open Thumbtack's own pro landing page with our tools (it returned an access-restricted notice), so the steps here come from its help center.

Does Thumbtack require a background check?

Yes, according to its help center: every account owner must take and pass a criminal background check through a nationally accredited third-party provider when creating an account. Thumbtack says the check is free, an SSN is not required if you submit a passport, driver's license or another government ID, and results typically take 5 to 7 business days. It also says it runs continuous checks on an annual basis.

How do I pause or stop paying for Thumbtack leads?

You have four options, listed in this order in Thumbtack's help center: hide your business for up to 30 days, turn off job preferences for a service, remove a service, or deactivate the account. Hiding pauses new leads and their charges while you can still message current customers. Deactivation is permanent and deletes your reviews, profile, projects and account balance, so use it last.

Can I get a refund for a Thumbtack lead?

Sometimes. Thumbtack refunds some leads automatically, for example one flagged by its Trust and Safety team or a Smart Match lead you decline as not a fit. For other cases you can request a refund within 45 days of the charge, and every decision is at Thumbtack's discretion. Refunds go to your Thumbtack balance by default, a customer hiring someone else is not a reason it refunds, and credit packages are not refundable.

Does a Thumbtack profile help local SEO?

It is a public profile on a well-known home-service marketplace, so it adds one more place that shows your business name and services, but we found no independent evidence that it is a Google ranking factor, and Thumbtack's help pages do not say the profile publishes your own phone number or address. In our catalog Thumbtack sits in position 5 on the cleaners, contractors and tradespersons citation lists and is labeled free, so keep the name, service area and website identical to your other listings and treat any ranking benefit as indirect.
