A Justia lawyer profile is a free listing in the Justia Lawyer Directory for attorneys licensed in the United States, and you get it either by claiming a profile that already exists under your name or by requesting a new one. Our take: claim it this week, finish it to 100%, and use your personal firm email so the claim sticks. Then treat everything Justia sells on top (Premium Placements, Connect Pro) as an advertising decision you make later, with the price in writing, because the free profile is the part that fixes your citation data. In our catalog Justia is the first site on our attorneys and legal citation lists, and our catalog labels it free. This guide covers how to claim or create the profile, what to put in it, what Justia sells beyond it, how to edit or remove it, how reviews work, and which other lawyer directories deserve the same treatment.

What we could verify, and what we could not

You should know the limits of this guide before the steps. Justia’s servers answered our research tools with “403 Forbidden” on the pages we tried on 2026-11-06: the lawyer directory listings page, the Connect Pro page, the FAQ, the marketing page and its blog. We could not open a single Justia page ourselves.

What we have instead is search results that quote Justia’s own pages on its own domains (lawyers.justia.com, justia.com/marketing, connect.justia.com and its blog at onward.justia.com). They are secondhand, and some are old: Justia’s payment terms for Connect Pro are dated May 2022, and its blog posts range from 2021 to 2026. So everything below that comes from Justia is marked “reported” or “per Justia”. We left out details we could not tie to a Justia page. Where the sources disagree or are silent, we say so instead of guessing. Open the live page before you rely on any step.

The official pages these notes come from:

How to claim or create your Justia lawyer profile

Justia’s directory is reported to hold profiles for lawyers whether or not they ever asked for one, so check before you create anything.

  1. Search for yourself. Use the search box on lawyers.justia.com with your name (and your state if the name is common). Open every result that could be you, including old firm names.
  2. Claim the existing profile. Justia’s claim pages are reported to let you claim a profile for free from the profile page. Use that link and do not request a second profile.
  3. Choose how to verify. Justia’s claim pages say the options you see depend on the contact details tied to the profile: a phone call with a code, or an email confirmation link (you need access to the email address you select). If you cannot use the listed phone or email, a photo option lets you attach a scan or photo of your documentation, and a claim page says that takes a couple of days. Justia also says Connect Pro requires you to verify your law license through the directory first.
  4. Use your personal law firm email. Justia’s profile creation page says access may be revoked if the profile is not associated with the attorney’s personal law firm email address, so avoid a shared mailbox.
  5. No profile found? Justia has a separate page for creating a new profile. Its directory page describes the free profile as open to lawyers licensed in the United States.
  6. Edit right away. Update phone, website and office address so they agree with your other professional profiles.

Claiming is also reported to make you a free Justia Connect member. Justia has called the free tier Basic and, in a newer announcement, Practice (alongside a free Public tier and the paid Pro tier). Claimed profiles are also reported to appear in the Legal Information Institute (LII) lawyer directory automatically, and to make you eligible for Justia’s Ask A Lawyer community.

What to fill in so the profile is complete

One Justia tips post recommends aiming for a 100% profile completion score and says a higher score helps your profile rank better inside the directory. General profile advice, with our comments (the fields are standard for lawyer profiles; Justia’s editor shows the exact list):

Justia’s tips come from its own marketing blog, which has an interest in a busy directory. We could not read the post in full, so treat the structure as reasonable and check the editor for the real fields and limits.

Free Justia lawyer profile vs paid products

The free profile and the paid products are different things that share a domain. Mixing them up is the common mistake.

Free profilePremium PlacementsJustia Connect Pro
What it isYour listing: bio, practice areas, contact details, photoA sponsored position in the directory for a chosen practice area and metroA membership layered on the free Practice tier
CostFree per Justia’s directory pagesNot published; third-party reviews describe it as quote-based$19.99 per month or $199.80 per year at the time of writing (November 2026), per Justia Connect Pro
What it addsAppears in Justia’s directory; claimed profiles also appear in the LII lawyer directoryJustia’s marketing page describes Platinum (exclusive, one per practice area and metro area) and Gold placements, a “Premium” label, and traffic statistics for buyersPer Justia: a Pro badge, an enhanced profile without competitor ads, Justia Chat, featured client and peer reviews, and $200 in Justia Credit annually (annual plan, subject to Justia’s credit terms)
Best forEvery US lawyerA firm that has decided to advertise for one specific practice area in one cityA lawyer who wants those extras and has read the cancellation terms

Notes on the table:

  • Premium Placement prices. We found no published price. Third-party reviews describe pricing as quote-based, and placements are sold by practice area and metro, so a price for a personal injury placement in a large city will not match a niche one in a small town. Ask for the price for your exact practice area and city in writing.
  • Connect Pro terms. Justia’s Connect Pro payment terms (dated May 2022 in what we saw) are reported to say membership fees are nonrefundable and are not prorated on cancellation, and Justia’s billing FAQ says memberships renew automatically. Read the live terms before paying and note the renewal date.
  • No ranking guarantee. Justia’s marketing describes Premium Placement as visibility inside its directory. Nothing we read promises a position in Google.

How to edit, disable or delete your Justia profile

We could not read the answers in Justia’s FAQ, so we will not invent button names. What we can say is what it covers: search results show FAQ entries on editing a profile, claiming one, removing one, and the difference between disabling and deleting a profile.

  • Edit: claim the profile, log in and use the profile editor. Justia has a redesigned dashboard and editor, per a Justia blog post.
  • Disable vs delete: Justia treats these as different actions. Read the FAQ entry first, because we cannot confirm which one can be reversed.
  • Remove: the FAQ has an entry on removing your profile from the directory. Start there, or contact Justia support.

Our take on removing it: think twice before you delete. An unclaimed profile you cannot control keeps showing whatever data Justia holds, which may be an old firm name or phone. A claimed profile with correct details is a citation working for you. If the real problem is a wrong detail, edit it. If you have genuinely left practice, find out what disabling does before you delete. Correcting a record usually beats erasing it.

Reviews and ratings on Justia

Lawyers worry about this part, so here is what Justia’s own policy pages say.

  • Client reviews: as reported, a lawyer cannot remove one independently. If the writer never received legal services from you, you can ask Justia to remove it (Justia may ask for proof of representation, and does not accept reviews based solely on a free consultation). If the writer was a client and you think the review is inaccurate, the notification email carries a link to respond. Lawyers may opt out of client reviews at any time by contacting Justia, without opting out of reviews from peers.
  • The Justia Lawyer Rating: Justia says only peer reviews factor into it, and client reviews have no effect on it.
  • Featured reviews: Justia lists featuring your best client and peer reviews as a Connect Pro feature. We could not confirm the limits, so check the live Pro page.

If reviews matter to your intake, do not rely on one directory. Our guide to review sites for business shows where reviews sit and why a Google review link is still the easiest to collect.

Does a Justia lawyer profile help local SEO?

It helps in a specific way. A Justia profile is a citation on a legal-specific directory: a page with your name, firm, address, phone and website. Pages like this are one of the places where your details are repeated, and consistency across them is what a citation is for. In our records Justia carries a domain rating of 88, which says the site as a whole has strong authority, not that your profile page will rank.

What it will not do: we do not know whether Justia’s outbound links pass ranking value, Justia does not claim they do, and a profile alone will not outrank firms that pay for placements inside the directory. So the realistic win is consistency. A lawyer whose Justia profile shows an old suite number or a former firm’s phone is giving clients and search engines two answers.

Law has one wrinkle most businesses do not have: a lawyer profile represents an individual attorney, while Google and other directories also list the firm. Each should be correct and the two should not be merged. Our guide to practitioner listings explains how an attorney’s profile and the firm’s profile coexist. Before you start, write one master record for the firm and one for each attorney (the name, address and phone you want everywhere), and run the free NAP checker to see what the open web currently shows.

Other lawyer directories worth claiming

Justia is one entry in a set. For a law firm, the order we would use:

  1. Google Business Profile for the firm, claimed first, because that is what the map pack reads.
  2. Justia (this guide), free.
  3. Avvo, where the profile carries an Avvo attorney rating. Our Avvo claim guide walks through it from Avvo’s own help article.
  4. FindLaw, which our records place alongside Justia and Avvo as one of the strongest legal profiles (domain rating 90).
  5. Your state bar’s lawyer lookup, where your license record lives. Make your name and status read the same everywhere.
  6. Industry-specific citations beyond law. Our attorneys citation sites list and legal list rank the directories we track, and a niche citation like Justia carries extra weight because it signals relevance.

None of these replaces the others. Each draws a different group of people who are already searching for a lawyer, so most firms are better served by claiming several and keeping them identical than by picking one. Our industry-specific citation sites guide explains the logic.

Common mistakes with a Justia lawyer profile

  • Claiming with a generic office email, then losing the ability to update.
  • Creating a second profile because the first search missed a name variation. Search under former names too, then use duplicate listing cleanup if one slipped through.
  • Pasting the website bio. Duplicate text adds nothing, so write a fresh one.
  • Leaving practice areas thin. They are what the directory uses to match you to a search.
  • Buying a placement before the free profile is right. Advertising a wrong phone number is the expensive way to be wrong.
  • Letting the attorney and firm details drift apart between Justia, your site and your Google Business Profile.

How Citation Builder fits in

Claiming Justia is a one-sitting job for the lawyer, and we would not suggest otherwise. The rest of a firm’s set is where consistency gets harder to hold. Our law firm citation service page lists what a legal set covers, and the same name, address and phone should run through all of it. The listings you own stay yours, and the ongoing value is that the set keeps agreeing with itself when details change.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Justia lawyer profile free?

Yes, the basic profile is free. Justia describes a free full profile for lawyers licensed in the United States. What costs money is separate: Premium Placements, which are sold by practice area and metro area, and the Justia Connect Pro membership. Justia's pages refused our research tools, so this comes from search results that quote those pages. Confirm on the live page.

How do I claim my Justia lawyer profile?

Search for your name in the directory at lawyers.justia.com and open your profile to find the claim link. Justia's claim pages offer one or more ways to verify, depending on the contact details stored on that profile: a phone call with a code, an email confirmation link, or a photo of your documentation if you cannot use those, which a claim page says takes a couple of days. If you are not listed, Justia has a separate page for creating a new profile. We could not open the live claim flow, so follow the screens you see.

Which email should I use to claim a Justia profile?

Use your personal law firm email address, not a generic office mailbox such as info@. Justia's profile creation page says access to a profile may be revoked if it is not associated with the attorney's personal law firm email address, and that profiles go through a moderation period. Treat that as the safe default and check the live page for the current wording.

How do I edit or remove my Justia lawyer profile?

Claim the profile first, then use the profile editor after you log in. Justia's FAQ has entries on editing a profile, removing it, and the difference between disabling and deleting one, but we could not read the answers, so we cannot tell you the exact button names or whether a deletion can be undone. Read that FAQ before you delete anything, and prefer correcting or disabling over deleting.

Can I delete a bad review on Justia?

Not on your own. As reported from Justia's client review pages, a lawyer cannot remove a review independently. If the writer never received legal services from you, you can ask Justia to remove it, and Justia may ask for proof of representation. If the writer was a client but the review is inaccurate, you can respond using the link in the notification email. Lawyers may opt out of client reviews at any time by contacting Justia. The Justia Lawyer Rating is separate: Justia says only peer reviews factor into it, not client reviews.

Does a Justia profile help local SEO?

It helps as a citation: a legal-specific directory page that repeats your name, firm, address, phone and website. It only helps if those details match your Google Business Profile and your site. We do not know whether Justia's links pass ranking value, and Justia does not promise a ranking, so treat the profile as a consistency and credibility signal, not a ranking lever.

What are the best lawyer directories besides Justia?

In our catalog, Avvo and FindLaw are the other flagship US legal profiles, and our records show Justia and Avvo both at domain rating 88 and FindLaw at 90. None replaces the others, since each draws a different pool of people searching for an attorney. Also claim your Google Business Profile and any state bar directory entry, and keep every detail identical.
