IndiaMART Business Listing: Lead Tool, Not a Citation

An IndiaMART business listing is free to create, but it is a lead tool for businesses that sell products to other businesses, not a local citation. IndiaMART calls itself India’s largest online B2B marketplace, and its free seller account starts from a mobile number with a one-time password. Our take: if you manufacture, wholesale, export or supply, list there for buyer enquiries. If you run a shop, clinic, salon or restaurant whose customers find you by location, skip it and spend the same hour on the directories that hold a consumer-facing local record. This guide gives the decision, the registration steps from IndiaMART’s own pages, and the places where those pages are silent.

On sources: we read IndiaMART’s own help-centre articles and its homepage on 30 October 2026. We did not create an account, did not open IndiaMART’s paid-plan pages, so everything below about the signup comes from those pages, not from walking the live form. Where they do not answer a question we say so.

IndiaMART Business Listing: Lead Tool, Not a Citation, illustrated cover

IndiaMART is a product marketplace, not a NAP directory

A citation is a public record of your business name, address and phone number (the NAP) on a site where people look for businesses. IndiaMART’s homepage describes something different: “India’s Largest Online B2B Marketplace”, connecting buyers with sellers, with a “Post Requirement” button for buyers and a free listing flow that ends with adding products or services.

That is why it is not a citation in our catalog. We hold the IndiaMART entry as inactive and manual, with the note that it is a B2B product marketplace, that the free seller signup is gated by a mandatory mobile (+91) SMS OTP with no email-alias path, and that it is not a NAP citation directory. Two separate things follow from that:

  • It is not built for local discovery. A person searching for a plumber or a dentist near them is not browsing a supplier catalog for business buyers.
  • We cannot finish it for you. The OTP goes to a phone only the business owner holds, so a third-party service cannot complete the signup. It stays an owner step, which is also true of Justdial and Sulekha.

Should you list? A plain decision table

Your businessList on IndiaMART?Why
Manufacturer, fabricator, packagerYesBuyers search the platform for exactly this; the listing is a product catalog
Wholesaler, distributor, traderYesSame buyer intent: other businesses sourcing stock
Exporter or import-export agentYesThe platform is built around supplier discovery
Retail shop with a storefrontProbably notYour customers are local consumers, not business buyers
Clinic, salon, restaurant, gymNoNothing to catalog for B2B buyers; use consumer-facing directories
Service business (repair, cleaning, tutoring) selling to householdsNoThe listing flow is built around adding products or services, and the audience is wrong
Service business selling to other companies (for example B2B services, equipment servicing)MaybeTest it with a small catalog if your buyers use the platform; check what the form allows for services

The tie-breaker is the question “would a business buyer I have never met search for what I sell on a marketplace?” If yes, the listing is a sales channel and worth the effort. If your customers come from a map pack, a recommendation or a walk past your door, it is not.

How to create a free IndiaMART seller account

These are the steps from IndiaMART’s help article “How to Create a Free Seller Account on IndiaMART”:

  1. Open the seller portal at seller.indiamart.com.
  2. Enter your mobile number. The article says to type the 10-digit number linked to your company, then click Submit.
  3. Verify with the OTP. A one-time password is sent to that phone. The article states that each registration requires OTP verification.
  4. Enter basic details: your name, company name, email ID, city, PIN code and GST details.
  5. Add products. The article says to add at least three products to your catalog.
  6. Enter your business address (city, PIN code, state) and your GST number, and check that everything is accurate and up to date.
  7. Click Start Selling. You are taken to the seller dashboard.

The homepage’s own summary of the free listing is shorter: create an account with your name and phone number, add your company’s name, address and email, then add at least three products or services. A second IndiaMART article, “How to Sell Items on IndiaMART”, lists GST information as optional at registration and says you can start selling once approved, while the free-account article says it may take up to 7 days for your company to appear in the free listing. Those pages describe the wait differently, so expect a delay and do not plan a launch around the first day.

Phone numbers are the one place where the details matter for local SEO. Use the number you already publish on your website and Google Business Profile, because registration starts from that mobile number. If the only phone you have for the business is a landline that cannot receive SMS, solve that first.

IndiaMART business registration: what the GST field means

The phrase “IndiaMART business registration” can sound like a legal registration process. What IndiaMART’s pages describe is a seller account, not a company registration. The help articles ask for GST details on the form, and the “How to Sell” article calls GST information optional at registration. We could not find an IndiaMART page that states whether GST is mandatory for every free seller. One third-party guide mentions a cancelled cheque and a NACH form for paid monthly plans, but we could not confirm that on IndiaMART’s own pages, so we do not rely on it. Check the live form with your own details before assuming either way.

IndiaMART price: what we can and cannot say

IndiaMART’s registration-fee article says free registration is available to businesses and that paid subscription plans offer added benefits. The article lists no plan prices and no commission rate, points to a separate page for plan options (which we did not open) and gives customer care contacts. We are not going to print a number from a third-party blog. If you are weighing a paid plan, ask IndiaMART directly for the current price in writing, and treat the paid plan as an advertising purchase, not a citation purchase.

The free account has no time limit, according to the help article, and it describes basic registration as letting you create a profile, list products and respond to buyer enquiries. It does not tell you how many enquiries a free seller can see compared with a paid one, which is the number you need before paying anything.

What a listing does for local SEO

Treat it as a side effect. A seller profile is one more place where your business details can appear, and consistent details are what the free NAP checker compares across the open web. But a catalog page on a product marketplace is a weak local signal compared with a directory that lists businesses by town and category, and we make no ranking claim for it.

If you do list, keep three rules:

  • Same NAP everywhere. Business name, address and phone must match your website and your Google Business Profile character for character.
  • Real products. The form asks for at least three. Add the ones you actually sell, not filler.
  • Keep it current. A catalog that shows discontinued products or an old phone number is a stale listing. See closed or moved business listings for how stale records cause trouble.

What we see on Indian builds

Of the 144 locations in our app, 20 are in India, and 15 of those have a verified live listing. None of those came from IndiaMART, because we do not build it. The Indian directories where a business can be found by place and category are a better use of the same effort, and the ranked list is on our India citation sites page. Justdial also has a mandatory mobile OTP gate in our catalog, so read our Justdial business listing guide before you start.

For the order of work, a sensible sequence for an Indian local business is: Google Business Profile first, then the consumer-facing directories on the India page, then the free global anchors, and only then, if you sell to other businesses, IndiaMART. Our free business listing sites guide explains how to rank the free options by value.

Checklist before you create the account

  • Decide the purpose. Leads from business buyers, or citation value? Only the first justifies IndiaMART.
  • Have a phone that can receive the OTP. It is the one number the account is tied to.
  • Prepare three real products or services you can name and describe.
  • Have your address and PIN code ready in the exact format you use everywhere else.
  • Do not pay on the first day. Use the free account, see whether enquiries arrive, and ask customer care what a paid plan includes before buying.
  • Re-run the NAP checker a week later to confirm your details match across sites.

Where IndiaMART fits with the rest of your citations

IndiaMART belongs in the sales part of your plan, next to the directories that carry real authority, not in the citation part. For the citation part, use our local citation finder to see the ranked directories in our catalog for your country and industry.

Citation Builder builds the listings that can be completed without a phone you hold, records every live listing with its public URL and a screenshot, and keeps your name, address and phone consistent across the directories it builds. The listings stay yours, with no recurring fee that removes them, and ongoing monitoring is the continuing value. See our citation building service for how that works across 50+ countries and 50+ industries.

Frequently asked questions

Is an IndiaMART business listing free?

Yes, basic registration is free. IndiaMART's help centre says it offers free registration for businesses and that the free seller account has no time limit, while paid subscription plans are an optional upgrade. The two help articles we read list no plan prices, so we do not quote any here.

How do I register a business on IndiaMART?

Open seller.indiamart.com, enter the 10-digit mobile number linked to your company, and verify it with the one-time password sent to that phone. Then enter your name, company name, email, city, PIN code and GST details, add at least three products, enter your business address and click Start Selling. IndiaMART's help article says it may take up to 7 days for the company to appear in the free listing.

Do I need a mobile number to list on IndiaMART?

Yes. IndiaMART's help article says each registration requires OTP verification, and registration starts from a mobile number. In our own catalog the IndiaMART signup is gated by a mandatory +91 mobile SMS OTP with no email alternative, which is why a third party cannot finish it for you and why we mark it as an owner-completed step.

Is IndiaMART a local citation site?

Not in the usual sense. IndiaMART describes itself as India's largest online B2B marketplace connecting buyers with sellers, and the free listing flow ends with adding products or services. A local citation is a plain record of your business name, address and phone number, and IndiaMART is built around a product catalog and buyer enquiries. In our catalog it is inactive and manual, and we classify it as a B2B product marketplace rather than a NAP citation directory.

Should a local shop or clinic list on IndiaMART?

Usually not for citation value. If your customers walk in or book locally, a product marketplace for business buyers will add little to your local search footprint, and you would be maintaining a catalog nobody in your area is browsing. Use the time on Justdial, Google Business Profile and the directories that actually hold a consumer-facing local record.

Who should list on IndiaMART?

Manufacturers, wholesalers, exporters and suppliers who sell products to other businesses and want inbound buyer enquiries. For them the listing is a sales channel first, and any citation value is a side effect. Keep the name, address and phone identical to your website and Google Business Profile so the side effect is at least consistent.

Does the IndiaMART free account get buyer leads?

We could not confirm it from IndiaMART's own pages. The help articles we read describe checking the dashboard for buyer leads and messages, but they do not say how lead access differs between the free and the paid account. Ask IndiaMART customer care before you assume either way.
