Foursquare Business Listing: How to Add and Claim Your Place
How to add or claim a Foursquare business listing, what moderation does, and why Foursquare places data flows into the apps and AI assistants people use.
On this page
Foursquare is the citation people underrate because they judge it as an app. Judge it as a data provider and it looks different: a places dataset licensed into other apps and maps, a domain rating of 91 in our catalog (joint-highest of the global anchors, alongside only Nextdoor at 92), and, according to several practitioner reports we have not been able to verify ourselves, one of the sources large AI assistants draw on for local place data. A Foursquare business listing is a single record that gets republished in places you will never submit to. That is exactly why it has to be right. Here is how to add or claim one, what moderation does with it, and where it sits in a citation profile.
What Foursquare actually is now
Foursquare’s consumer check-in product is a small part of the company. The larger part is the places platform: a dataset of venues with names, addresses, phone numbers, categories and hours that other companies license to power their own maps, search and location features. When you fix your Foursquare record, you are fixing a source, not a destination.
Two consequences for local SEO:
- It behaves like a data aggregator. Get the record right and the correction propagates downstream on its own; get it wrong and the error propagates just as fast. Our guide to data aggregators explains the leverage.
- It is machine-readable in exactly the way AI engines prefer. Clean, structured, publicly crawlable NAP fields with categories and hours are what a model can cite confidently. That is why citations for AI search puts Foursquare, OpenStreetMap and Bing Places at the front of the queue.
Before you add anything: search
Foursquare probably already has a record for you, created from a check-in, a data import or an earlier owner. Search the name, then the address, then the phone number. If a place exists, claim it; do not add a second. Foursquare’s own systems match new suggestions against existing places and will often return the existing record rather than create a duplicate, but a near-miss (a slightly different name at the same address) can slip through and leave you with two records to reconcile later. The cleanup rules are in finding and fixing duplicate listings.
Have your master NAP ready before you touch the form: the exact name, the address in one fixed format, the phone that rings, the website, the hours. The Foursquare record must match Google, Apple, Bing and your site character for character. Run the free NAP checker first if you do not know what the web currently says about you; it reads Foursquare directly.
Adding a new place
- Suggest the place through Foursquare’s add-a-place flow (available in its apps and on the web) or, if you use Citation Builder, let the official API submission do it as part of your build.
- Enter the NAP from the master record and choose the most specific category that genuinely describes the business. Categories on Foursquare are precise, and the right one is what makes the record useful to every downstream app.
- Place the pin at the entrance customers use. A pin in the wrong spot is a wrong-address citation in disguise.
- Wait for moderation. A new place suggestion is reviewed before it becomes a public page. This can take days and sometimes longer, and it is normal. If nothing appears after a couple of weeks, search again: the suggestion may have been matched to an existing place that you should now claim.
- Save the public URL once it exists. Only a public page counts as a citation; a pending suggestion does not.
Claiming the listing
Whether Foursquare created the record or you did, claim it. Find the place, use the claim option on the listing, and complete Foursquare’s ownership verification. The method and any fee have changed over the years, so follow the current flow rather than any guide’s screenshot of it. Once claimed you control the fields that matter, can respond to tips, and can add photos, a description and the details (menu, booking links) that make the record worth citing.
Service area businesses
Foursquare is built around places people go to, which makes it awkward for businesses customers never visit. If you are a service area business, list the real business address, keep it identical to the address stored on Google and Bing, and treat the record as a citation rather than a storefront. The platform-by-platform rules for hidden addresses are in service area business citations.
After a move or a rebrand
Correct Foursquare on the same day as Google, Apple and Bing, ahead of the long tail of directories. Because Foursquare’s data is republished downstream, a stale Foursquare record is the one most likely to re-infect other listings with the old address or the old name. The order of operations is in how to change your business address everywhere and business name change: update every listing.
How Citation Builder handles Foursquare
Foursquare is the only directory Citation Builder integrates with through an official API. On every full build it suggests your place through Foursquare’s Places API with your exact NAP; if Foursquare already holds a matching place, the API returns that record instead of creating a duplicate, which is the dedup you want. Foursquare’s moderation decides when the public page appears, and Citation Builder re-checks the listing on a schedule and records the live URL with a screenshot of the public page once it is there. The listing is permanent and yours; claiming it as the owner afterwards is still worth the few minutes. Google Business Profile and Apple Business Connect remain listings you claim and manage directly.
Next: claim Bing Places for Business and Apple Maps through Business Connect, then start free to see the ranked citation sites for your country and industry and have the rest of the set built for you.
Frequently asked questions
Is a Foursquare business listing free?
Adding a place to Foursquare and claiming it are free. Foursquare has offered paid options for faster verification and for advertising at various times, but the listing itself, the one that acts as your citation and feeds downstream apps, costs nothing.
Why does Foursquare matter if nobody I know uses the app?
Because Foursquare is a places data provider first and a consumer app second. Its places dataset is licensed into other apps, maps and services, so your Foursquare record is republished in places you never submitted to. It carries a domain rating of 91 in our catalog, the joint-highest of the global anchors, and it is the only directory Citation Builder integrates with through an official API.
How long does a new Foursquare place take to appear?
A new place suggestion goes through Foursquare's moderation before it becomes a public page, which can take days and sometimes longer. If Foursquare already has a matching place, it returns that record instead of creating a new one, so a submission that seems to do nothing often means the place already exists and should be claimed.
How do I claim a Foursquare listing I did not create?
Find the place on Foursquare, use the claim option on the listing and complete Foursquare's ownership verification. The verification method and any fee have changed over the years, so follow whatever the current flow offers. Once claimed you can correct the name, address, phone, hours and category, which is the point: an unclaimed record is edited by strangers.
Does Citation Builder create my Foursquare listing?
Yes. Citation Builder uses Foursquare's official Places API to suggest your place with your exact NAP as part of every full build. Foursquare's moderation decides when the public page appears, and Citation Builder re-checks it on a schedule and records the live URL with a screenshot once it is public. Claiming the listing as the owner afterwards is still worth doing.
