Bing Places for Business is the listing most owners create last and the one that has quietly become more important, because Bing’s index is what powers Microsoft’s search, Bing Maps and the AI assistants built on Microsoft’s stack, and it is the index other assistants reach for when they cannot use Google. Claiming your Bing Places listing takes ten minutes, most of it copying from your Google Business Profile, and the only step that can stall is verification. Here is the process, the import shortcut and its trap, and what Bing data actually feeds.

Why Bing Places is not optional any more

Bing has always been the second search engine, and for years that was the whole argument. Three things changed the maths:

  • Bing’s index feeds AI answers. Microsoft’s own assistants read it directly, and Bing is the web index most non-Google assistants license or query. When someone asks an assistant for a locksmith nearby, the place data behind the answer often traces back to Bing, and Bing’s place data traces back to Bing Places. Our guide to citations for AI search covers the mechanism.
  • It is a high-authority citation with almost no competition. Most of your competitors have not claimed theirs, which means a complete, verified Bing listing is an easy, independent record of your name, address and phone that search engines cross-check.
  • Unclaimed listings still exist, and they are wrong. Bing builds places from data feeds whether you claim them or not. An unclaimed record carries whatever hours and phone number a feed last supplied.

That is why Bing Places sits with Foursquare and Facebook as the universal anchors in our free business listing sites list, right after the two map platforms.

Before you start

Write or open your master NAP: the exact name, the address in one fixed format, the phone that rings, the website. Bing must match your Google Business Profile, your Apple listing, your site and your directory citations character for character. Run the free NAP checker first if you are not sure what the rest of the web says about you; there is no point importing an inconsistency.

Option A: import from Google Business Profile (fastest)

  1. Sign in to Bing Places with a Microsoft account the business controls.
  2. Choose the import from Google option. You authorise Bing to read your Google Business Profile, pick the location (or locations) to import, and Bing creates the listing from those details.
  3. Check every imported field before finishing. The import is faithful, which is the trap: a wrong suite number on Google is now a wrong suite number on Bing. Compare against the master NAP, not against Google.
  4. Decide on sync. Bing can keep the listing synced with Google afterwards. Sync is convenient right up to the day it silently stops, so treat Bing as a listing you still check after every change on Google rather than one that takes care of itself.
  5. Complete verification (below).

Option B: create the listing manually

  1. Sign in and choose to add a business. Single location for one site, the bulk option if you manage many.
  2. Search first. Bing may already hold a record for you. Claim it rather than creating a second; two records for one business is a duplicate you will spend months reconciling. See finding and fixing duplicate listings.
  3. Enter the NAP from your master record, then the website, hours, and the most specific category that genuinely describes the business. As on Google, the primary category governs which searches you appear for.
  4. Add photos, a description and services. Bing rewards a complete profile the way Google does, and an empty one reads as unclaimed.
  5. Complete verification.

Verification: the step that stalls

Bing Places verifies ownership with a PIN sent by phone, email or postcard. The options you are offered depend on the business. The listing is not public until the PIN is entered, so:

  • If the phone option is offered, use it; it is immediate.
  • If only a postcard is offered, request it the same day and set a reminder; the PIN has an expiry.
  • If nothing arrives, the details you entered probably do not match what Microsoft has on record, most often the phone number. Fix the mismatch on the listing before requesting a new PIN.

A verified listing is the only kind that counts as a citation. An unverified draft does not show up anywhere.

Service area businesses on Bing

Bing supports businesses that serve customers at their location. Enter the real address for verification, hide it from the public listing if customers do not visit, and keep that hidden address identical to the one on Google and on every other platform that hides it. Drift in hidden fields is the most common trade-business inconsistency because nobody looks at what they cannot see; the platform-by-platform rules are in service area business citations.

After a move or a rebrand

If Bing is synced from Google, confirm the change carried across rather than assuming it did. If it is not synced, edit Bing the same day you edit Google, before the long tail of directories, because aggregators that copy from the big platforms will otherwise re-import the old value into listings you have already fixed. The full order of operations is in how to change your business address everywhere and business name change: update every listing.

Where Bing fits in a citation profile

Bing Places is one of the global anchors Citation Builder builds for you: it submits the listing with your exact NAP as part of the ranked set for your country and industry, records it with its URL, and re-checks it on a schedule. Microsoft’s verification PIN goes to the business, so that step is always yours, and the listing is public only once you have entered it. Google Business Profile and Apple Business Connect remain listings you claim and manage directly; Citation Builder surfaces both as recommended citations rather than posting to them. The listings it builds are permanent and owned by you; the subscription pays for the ongoing building and monitoring around them.

Next: claim Apple Maps through Business Connect if you have not, add your Foursquare business listing, then start free to see the ranked citation sites for your market.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bing Places for Business free?

Yes. Creating and managing a Bing Places listing is free. You need a Microsoft account, your exact business details and the ability to complete Microsoft's verification. There is no paid listing tier.

Can I import my Google Business Profile into Bing Places?

Yes. Bing Places offers an import that copies your Google Business Profile details into a Bing listing and can keep them synced afterwards. It is the fastest way to claim Bing, but check the imported fields before you finish: anything wrong on Google is now wrong on Bing too, and a sync that later stops silently leaves the two drifting apart.

How does Bing Places verify a business?

Through a PIN that Microsoft sends by phone, email or postcard, depending on what the business qualifies for. Your listing is not public until the PIN is entered. If you never received one, the details you entered may not match what Microsoft has on record, which is usually a phone or address mismatch.

Does Bing Places matter if most of my customers use Google?

More than it used to. Bing's index underpins Microsoft's own search, Bing Maps, Windows search and Microsoft's AI assistants, and several third-party assistants read Bing's index because it is the one large web index other than Google that is available to them. A business missing from Bing is missing from an increasing share of AI-generated local answers.

Does Citation Builder submit my business to Bing Places?

Bing Places is one of the global anchors Citation Builder builds for you as a citation, with your exact NAP. Microsoft's ownership verification (the phone, email or postcard PIN) is always completed by you, because it goes to the business, and the listing is not public until it is done.
