Best citation sites in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a thin directory layer: in October 2026 we checked more than 40 Sri Lankan business directory sites and only two were free, live and accepting new businesses. This is the ranked list of the 29 citation sites that verify a Sri Lankan business to search engines and AI assistants.

The ranked list above pairs Sri Lanka's two national directories with the global anchors whose data feeds maps, search and AI assistants. Ranks reflect relevance for a business in Sri Lanka; see the full citation sites directory or browse citation sites by country for other markets.

Sri Lanka citation sites by industry

Layer your industry on top of the Sri Lanka list to add niche directories.

A Sri Lankan business is verified against a short list of records, so every one of them counts. Two national directories passed our checks: contacts.lk, a free general directory with roughly 21,000 business listings across every district, and Findit.lk, a free business directory and deals platform with several thousand company profiles. Around them sit the global anchors, Foursquare, OpenStreetMap, Bing Places, Facebook, Brownbook and Hotfrog among them, whose places data maps, apps and AI assistants read everywhere, Sri Lanka included. With Google handling about 94% of searches in Sri Lanka (StatCounter, September 2026) and most people online through a smartphone, the record that matters is small enough to complete and keep identical, which is exactly what a consistent NAP needs.

The national layer: contacts.lk and Findit.lk

contacts.lk is the stronger of the two. Basic listings are free (a paid premium tier adds visibility), new businesses are added after a short review, and each public business page shows the name, phone number, address and a normal link to the website in plain HTML, which is exactly the kind of record a search engine or an AI assistant can read and cross-check. It covers Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Jaffna and every other district, and it was still adding businesses when we checked.

Findit.lk is a weaker but still useful second source. Registration is free and its business directory holds several thousand company profiles in general categories, but its public company pages show the name, category, description and address while the phone and website sit behind a contact form. Treat it as a name-and-address citation: worth having, and worth filling in exactly, but not a substitute for a complete contacts.lk listing.

What we checked and rejected (October 2026)

Most lists of Sri Lankan business directories are out of date. We checked each candidate with a normal browser request and, where needed, a real browser, and wrote down why it failed. A short version, so you do not waste an afternoon on them:

Site or groupWhat we found
Rainbow Pages (SLT Digital Services)The national yellow pages since 1939, but its online business listing is sold as advertising, and the site blocked our requests outright
LankaYPLive and indexed, but paid only: no free listing tier
yellowpages.lkA directory template with no published listings
Uplist.lk, CBizz.lkBehind bot protection, account required, paid packages; inner pages missing
ClassifyLanka, Lanka InformationThe add-a-listing pages return server errors
lankabusinessdirectory.com, srilankabusinessdirectory.com and four similar domainsParked domains with no directory behind them
yellow.lk, businesslist.lk, srilankayellowpages.com and five moreDo not resolve at all
ikman.lk, Hitad.lkClassifieds, not business directories
Kompass, the EDB exporters directory, the chambers of commerceB2B export catalogs or paid membership bodies, not local citations

If you already pay for a Rainbow Pages or LankaYP listing, keep it accurate: a paid listing is still a public record of your name, address and phone. Just do not expect a free route to either.

The global anchors carry most of the weight

Because the national layer is thin, the global sources do more of the work in Sri Lanka than in a market like the UK or Australia. Foursquare and OpenStreetMap feed the places data behind a long tail of map apps and AI assistants; Bing Places covers Microsoft's index and Copilot; Facebook is, for many Sri Lankan customers, the first check that a business is real before they call; Brownbook and Hotfrog add free, crawlable corroboration. None of them are Sri Lanka-specific, which is their value: they carry your record to tourists planning a trip, to buyers abroad and to the AI assistants they ask. The build order for the whole set is in our citation building guide, and the free local citation finder shows the ranked list for Sri Lanka with any industry added.

Google Business Profile and Apple Business Connect sit outside this set: they are recommended citations that the owner manages directly, not listings built for you. Keep both current with the same name, address and phone as everything else.

Phone format, addresses and three scripts

Write the phone number one way everywhere: the international form with the +94 country code and the leading zero dropped, for example +94 77 xxx xxxx, not a local 077 form on one site and the international form on the next. Pick one address style that names the street, the area or Colombo postal zone (Colombo 03, Colombo 07), the city and the district, and keep exactly that structure on every listing. Sinhala and Tamil are the official languages and English is the link language, and most directories work in English, so keep one English NAP as your canonical record. If you also publish your name in Sinhala or Tamil script, use the same spelling every time rather than a different transliteration on each site.

ElementCanonical form
Phone+94, one format, on every listing
AddressStreet, area or Colombo zone, city, district
NameExact registered or trading name, no variants
LanguageOne English record; any Sinhala or Tamil version spelled the same everywhere

Industry sites matter more for tourism and hospitality

Tourism is where Sri Lankan businesses get the most from industry platforms. Hotels, guesthouses, tour operators and restaurants are judged by travellers on the global travel and review sites long before they ever reach a local directory, so those platforms belong at the top of the list: see the ranked sources for hotels, travel and tourism and restaurants. For most other Sri Lankan small businesses the realistic, high-value set is the two national directories plus the global anchors, short enough to build completely and to keep in step.

Keeping the record straight as a Sri Lankan business grows

Businesses move between Colombo zones, switch to a new mobile number or register a new trading name as they formalise with the Registrar of Companies, and each change leaves an old copy behind on whichever listing nobody revisits. With only a handful of records to check, one stale copy is a large share of the evidence a search engine or AI assistant sees. Decide the phone format, the address structure and the exact name once, apply the same decision on every listing whenever something changes, and run the free NAP checker to see which of your records still match.

Citation sites in Sri Lanka: FAQ

What are the best business directories in Sri Lanka?

In our October 2026 check two national directories passed: contacts.lk, a free general directory whose public pages show the name, phone, address and website, and Findit.lk, a free directory whose public pages show the name and address. Alongside them, Foursquare, OpenStreetMap, Bing Places, Facebook, Brownbook and Hotfrog carry the global places data that maps and AI assistants read. Completing all of them with one identical name, address and phone matters more than adding weak extra sites.

Is Rainbow Pages free for businesses?

Not online, as far as we could confirm. Rainbow Pages, run by SLT Digital Services, sells its online business listing as an advertising product, and its website refused our requests, so we could not find a free self-serve form. If you already have a Rainbow Pages listing, keep its name, address and phone identical to the rest of your record.

Are Sri Lankan business listing sites free?

The two that passed our check are: contacts.lk offers free basic listings with a paid premium option, and Findit.lk registration is free. LankaYP is paid only and Rainbow Pages sells listings as advertising. Every global anchor on this page, including Foursquare, OpenStreetMap, Bing Places and Facebook, is free to claim.

How should I write my phone number on Sri Lankan listings?

Use the full international form with the +94 country code and the leading zero dropped, for example +94 77 xxx xxxx, and repeat it exactly on every listing. A number that reads 077 on one site and +94 77 on another is the most common reason an otherwise complete citation profile fails a consistency check.

Should I list my business in Sinhala or Tamil as well as English?

Keep one English record as your canonical name, address and phone, because most directories and the global platforms work in English. If you also publish a Sinhala or Tamil version of your name, spell it the same way everywhere you use it, rather than a different transliteration on each site.

Do Google Business Profile and Apple Business Connect count as citations in Sri Lanka?

They matter for local visibility, especially with Google handling about 94% of searches in Sri Lanka, but they work differently from this list: they are recommended citations the owner manages directly rather than listings built for you. Keep both current with the same name, address and phone as your contacts.lk and Findit.lk listings.
